Vallin’s muscles twitched spasmodically, a sign that the stun gun blast that had paralyzed him was finally wearing off. He had been in and out of consciousness for several minutes, and the last few minutes seemed to him almost like a dream. Adrienne was there, fighting Jeremy for the throne of Gilead. It seemed impossible, but as Vallin used the ring ropes to drag himself to his feet, he looked across the ring and saw Adrienne standing there, leaning in the corner and trying to catch her breath. He knew her immediately in spite of the blood that covered half her face and her buzzed haircut. He recognized her with his heart, and the sight of her filled him with love. There would be time to ask questions later, for now all Vallin wanted was to wrap Adrienne in his arms and welcome her back to Gilead.

Their eyes met, and in that moment all of the long months they had spent apart vanished in a heartbeat. Vallin forgot the torture and humiliation he had endured at the hands of Jeremy Manthus. Her smile beamed like a ray of sunshine on the coldest day of winter. The people in the crowd were cheering, but they sounded far away. Vallin hardly noticed as he staggered toward Adrienne. She rushed to him from the opposite side of the ring and threw herself into his embrace.

Vallin wrapped his arms around her and kissed her bristly hair. There were tears in his eyes, but not the tears of sorrow that had plagued him for so many months. These were tears of joy, and Vallin welcomed them, unashamed to let them spill down his face. He hugged her so tight that he thought he might have hurt her, but when Adrienne pulled away from him it was only to look up into his face with her green eyes shining.

Oh, Vallin,” she said. “Oh, how I’ve missed you.”

“I missed you too, Adrienne. I…”

Before he could finish, she snaked a hand around his neck and pulled her to him. She kissed him, or maybe he kissed her, he wasn’t sure. At that moment the crowd suddenly roared, and it felt like his ears had become unplugged. They stood there for several moments, their love renewed as the people of Gilead sounded their approval. Soon they would have to face some difficult decisions, but not now.

Now was a time to rejoice.
